Basin waste & overflow questions
Small fitting differences matter. Choose the waste to suit the basin’s drainage design and the installation below it.
How do I know whether my basin has an overflow?
Check the basin’s description and technical drawing for an overflow specification and look for the overflow opening in the bowl. Do not rely only on a styled photograph, which may not show it. If the listing is unclear, send us the exact basin SKU before choosing the waste.
Do I need a slotted or unslotted basin waste?
Choose a waste approved for the basin’s overflow arrangement. A slotted waste is typically used where an overflow needs to drain through the waste fitting, while a basin without an overflow commonly uses an unslotted fitting. Some wastes have other compatible designs, so follow the basin and waste specifications rather than making a universal assumption.
Are all basin pop-up wastes the same size?
No. Compare the basin outlet requirement with the waste’s stated fitting size, overall dimensions and clamping range. Check the top thickness and the space for the trap as well. The visible cap diameter is not the same measurement as the plumbing connection, so use the technical drawing.
Is an overflow ring the same as a pop-up waste?
No. An overflow ring is the visible trim around a basin’s overflow opening. A pop-up waste sits in the basin’s drain and controls whether water can leave through it. They serve different purposes and may be sold separately; buying an overflow ring does not supply the basin waste.
Can I use a basin waste in a bath?
Do not assume a basin waste is suitable for a bath. Baths have their own outlet and installation requirements, and some use a specified waste or overflow assembly. Select a product identified as compatible with the exact bath, then have your installer check the required parts and access.
Can I match the waste finish to my mixer?
Compare the actual finish and brand specifications, particularly when mixing suppliers. Similar names do not guarantee an identical tone. First establish the correct waste type and size for the basin, then select an available finish; appearance should not override drainage compatibility.
