Toilet suite types

There are three main types of toilet suites to choose from:
  • Close-coupled toilets This is the traditional style of toilet, with a close-coupled cistern and a horizontal waste outlet. The cistern sits on top of the pan (toilet bowl) and is usually used with a P-trap. Close-coupled toilets are the most popular type of toilet suites in Australia. They’re easy to install and maintain and provide a good level of comfort.
  • Back-to-wall toilets Back-to-wall toilet suites are similar to close-coupled toilets, but the cistern is hidden away behind a wall or false cabinet. This gives the toilet a more streamlined look and can save space in small bathrooms. As the name suggests, the back of the toilet is flush with the wall, so there’s no gap between the toilet and the wall. This makes back-to-wall toilets very easy to clean.
  • Wall-hung toilets Wall-hung toilets are mounted on the wall, with the cistern concealed within the wall or in a false cabinet. This leaves the floor around the toilet completely clear, which is ideal for small bathrooms or en suites where space is at a premium. Wall-hung toilets are also easier to clean than other toilets, as there are no nooks and crannies for dirt and grime to build up in.

Different toilet flushing systems

Most modern toilet suites have a dual-flush system, which allows you to choose between a full flush for solid waste or a partial flush for liquid waste. This makes the toilet more efficient, as it uses less water. There are several types of flushing systems for toilets. The flush type affects the amount of water used, the noise level, and the power of the flush, so it’s an important factor to consider.
  • Gravity-fed cisterns Gravity-fed cisterns are the most common type of flushing system. They work by using gravity to fill the cistern with water. The water is then released into the bowl when the flush button is pushed, causing the waste to be flushed away.
  • Pressure-assisted flush Pressure-assisted flushing systems use air pressure to force water into the bowl when the flush button is pushed. This type of system uses less water than a gravity-fed system but can be noisy.
  • Tornado flush Tornado flush systems are a type of pressure-assisted flush. They use a jet of water to force waste out of the bowl, making them very powerful and effective.

Bidet toilets & accessories

Bidet toilets have a built-in bidet sprayer that cleans you with a jet of water after you’ve used the toilet. Bidet toilets are becoming more popular in Australia as they’re more hygienic than traditional toilets. They’re also seen as a luxury item, and some offer several functions, such as a warm air dryer and various spray settings. If you don’t want to replace your entire toilet, you can buy a bidet seat that fits onto your existing toilet. These seats range from a simple cold spray to a luxurious, heated seat with all the bells and whistles. You can also buy standalone bidet sprays that mount on the wall next to your toilet. These are less expensive than bidet toilets, but they don’t offer all the same features.
